smoky a Comb smoky jack: puff-ball (Lycoperdon gemmatum);
HORSE(S) FART.
C 75-2 A type of brown, spongy ball, very soft, and
found in the marshes. When one squeezed it a smoke would come from it; for this reason it
was given the name 'smoky jack.' It was used as a blood stopper and cleanser, for it
sealed a wound, keeping out infection.
