cotton head dress, with drooping peak in front, used by women and girls. An exaggerated

sun-bonnet, made of cotton or shirting, worn by women while hay-making, fishmaking,
working in gardens, etc, having a very wide brim covering the neck. It also means a large
kind of home-made sou'wester, made of calico & treated with linseed oil, to make it
waterproof, used by men out fishing, having the same kind of very wide brim over the
neck, & buttoning in front under the chin, so that the hat almost covers the entire
