The first field ice to appear is 'white' or 'northern slob' formed off Labrador in the
early winter, but it is followed almost immediately by 'sheet' ice which is more dense
and solid though not as thick. 1972 BROWN 57 Wes told Joe of his belief that the seals
lay to the west on the sheet ice, and of his ill luck so far.
