owned more than one trap, he would sign on a crew of sharemen. 1986 SAUNDERS 74 Most
Gander Bay men were away to work, either on the Exploits main drive if it was in the
spring, or a shareman on a codtrap crew down Change Islands way, or in the lumberwoods
cutting pulp for the A.N.D. Company. 1987 POWELL 29 I had two sharemen as crew members
during my first summer fishing on my own. Shareman was the name used when I first
started and the name has not changed today. If the fish that was caught and sold was
worth $100.00, the amount was cut in half, one for expenses, the other shared equally
between the skipper and the sharemen. So in the case of a skipper and two sharemen, they
each received $16.75 out of each hundred dollars.
