blade of an axe strikes anything harder than its own metal, there will be a dent put in
the metal. This dent is a 'shard.' C 71-123 When a knife, an axe or other cutting utensil
had a piece taken out of the edge (probably accidentally) it was said to have a shard in
it and thus needed to be ground and sharpened.
