LUMSDEN 77 Now there is heard a simple, earnest prayer, after which the 'sermon book' is
produced, and the congregation of sea-toilers listen with becoming attention and interest
to the reading of the words of some noted preacher, great in his simplicity. P 212-75 The
sermon book was a familiar piece of essential equipment in the Newfoundland outport.
Without [sermon books], usually provided by the minister, the lay reader who 'took the
service' in the absence of the minister, preaching at the other churches on his circuit,
would not have been able to provide a sermon for his congregation.
