saviour's letter n also letter of Jesus Christ. A
letter, usu printed, purporting to be by Christ, kept as a moral
guide and as a charm.
1836 [WIX]2 114 There is, among
the poor, in many parts of this island, a superstitious respect paid to a piece of
printed paper, which is called the 'Letter of Jesus Christ.' This, in addition to
Lentulus's well-known epistle to the Senate of Rome, contains many absurd superstitions,
such as the promise of safe delivery in child-bed, and freedom from bodily hurt to those
who may possess a copy of it. M 69-5 When she knew that her neighbour's house was burning
she went, got her copy of the Saviour's Letter and pinned it up on the end of her [house]
nearest the burning house. M 69-7 Some families have two copies of the letter; one in
their house and one in their fishing boat... The granny woman about 1910-20 always
carried the Saviour's Letter with her when she went to deliver a baby.
