In 1899, the Grenfell Mission acquired the hospital vessel Strathcona. It travelled along the coast of Labrador and northern Newfoundland to treat sick or injured patients and deliver supplies. The Strathcona carried a dispensary, emergency cots, x-ray equipment, and space for a mission hall.
