Old Glory Hole

Buchans' Mine, c. 1980.

The Rothmere mine headframe is pictured in the background. "Old Glory Hole," the first mine workings, is located in the foreground. The headframe refers to the structure over the mine shaft that supports the hoisting equipment. "Glory Hole" is a name given to a particular kind of ore body. The ore deposit is mined by a drilling and blasting method which causes the ore to collapse into a pit, from which it is relatively easily accessible. "Glory Hole" ore is usually more pure and concentrated than ordinary ore bodies.
