The Colony of Avalon at Ferryland, Newfoundland, Canada is a complex heritage
site of international significance. In the early
1500s, Portuguese, French and English mariners first dared to exploit the rich cod fishery of the
New World along the shores of the southern Avalon. At Ferryland, archaeologists have
uncovered the oldest known remains of the seasonal fishing stations where migratory fishers
worked summer after summer, long before Europeans settled what would someday become
the United States and Canada.
The Colony of Avalon Foundation is partnered with the Heritage Web Site Project
in producing a high-quality educational web site detailing the archaeological dig at Ferryland.
The web site debuted in April 1999. Features include a
virtual tour of the dig, articles on the history of the Colony
of Avalon, a guide to attractions at the dig, and
a comprehensive listing of artifacts.
