The Legal System in Labrador


During its eight-year span, the Labrador Court heard several serious cases. The crew of the schooner Esperance was held at gunpoint while the defendant removed “cloth, flannel and sundry other articles” from the vessel. This seemed to have originated from a dispute between Brown, the defendant, and the vessel's owner, Furlong. While removing the goods from the ship Brown allegedly stated that “if he had Mr. Furlong on board he would blow his brains out.” The Judge ruled for Furlong and in doing so stated that,
