Lundrigan Appeal Decision
Forbes found in favour of the Surrogate judges, Buchan
and Leigh, and dismissed Lundrigan's action. However, he reprimanded the Court
for its unmerciful and cruel punishment. The repercussions of the incident led
to a new Judicature Act in 1824 which, among other reforms, replaced the
Surrogate Courts with a system of Circuit Courts presided over by a trained
judiciary.
