Admiralty Office 6th April 1802.
MY LORD, Having appointed James Gambier Esqr Vice Admiral of the White, to be Commander in Chief of His Majesty's Ships and Vessels employed and to be employed at and about Newfoundland, the Islands of Madelaine and Anticosti, and upon the Coast of Labrador, from the River St John to the entrance of Hudson's Straits, in the room of Vice Admiral Sir Charles Morice Pole, Bart, We desire your Lordship will please to obtain His Majesty's Commission for him to be Governor of Newfoundland &c. in the same manner as hath been granted to former Commanders in Chief upon that Station, and also to signify to Us His Majesty's pleasure whether the Instructions that are preparing for Vice Admiral Gambier, should in any respect be altered from those under which Vice Admiral Sir Charles Morice Pole sailed last Year.
