Your statement "For...years...European exploration of Newfoundland was assumed to begin...with...John Cabot...in 1497" continues to frame orthodox ignorance as being shared by everyone when it was not. Although the Norse and Irish knew otherwise, we were taught Newfoundland's discoverer was Cabot. As we learn, you tell us our ignorance was once shared by everyone. Pretending past scholars were objective misportrays knowledge, the sociology of history and create an artificial objectivity that Memorial, like every other human activity, cannot claim. You are caught by your continued colonialisms.

I'm interested in the native people of Nova Scotia. Around the turn of the century of 1900, there was a medium sized hunting party of about 15 Micmac Indians who would arrive at my Great Grandmother's farm on the south shore of Nova Scotia. They just came into the yard, and all sat down and waited. Eventually, my relatives would notice them, and bring them a meal to sustain them. Then they got up and left, without saying a word. The year my grandmother was born, an Indian saved her life. She was tiny, only about 2 or 3 pounds. The Indian instructed my Great Grandparents to bathe little Ruth in sea water from the Bay of Fundi, and wrap her in seaweed. This worked pretty well, as she lived, and went on to marry and have 7 children. We feel a sense of loyalty to these people.

I was born in Harbour Grace & grew up in St. John's. I am researching the wooden sealing ships built in Dundee, Scotland from 1858 to 1891.In particular the S.S. BEAR, which was bought by the U. S. Navy and became a very well known ship in the U. S. Coast Guard ,as the Bear of Oakland she went to the Antacrtic with Admiral Byrd, and was back in the U. S. Navy in W.W.II. This ship had many unique features eg the propeller could be lifted when sailing for better speed and to avoid damage by ice. This ship is described in a number of books which I have copies in my library. This site is very helpful.

My grandfather was William George "Sonny" Pike. He married Nellie Thoms on June 29, 1915. They had three children while living in Carbonear. They were John, Eva and Wilbur. They moved to the United States in the early 1920's where they later had three more children. They were Beverly, Olive and Lester. I just wanted to let people know that this line of the Pike family might be descendants of Richard Howell Pike and Sophia Knowlton. I am glad that I found this website.

Hello, I visited your web site after seeing a map which Captain Cook made of Carbonear Harbour. I typed in Carbonear on Google and your site came up, which I find very interesting. Captain Cook has strong links to my home town of Whitby as his ships, Endeavour and Resolution, were built here and took him on to his many voyages of discovery. Our local museum has a section devoted to him and many maps etc are on view.

I have a family picture from the 1800's that I am trying to track. My grandmother always said we came from Labrador. The picture is either my great grandfather and his wife or my grandfather's uncle. The family name is Fuller. Is there somewhere I can send a copy and maybe get more information. grandmado@atmc.net

I came to the site looking for information about taking my sons to Newfoundland next summer. What I found was amazing, Frances Cluett. I believe she might be my great-great aunt as my great-great grandmother Sarah Cluett came to Dartmouth from Belleoram. I can't wait to visit Memorial University archives.

My mother was born in Newfoundland and married an American Military man and was brought to the states. For years I have looked for pictures of the land she loved so much. When she was dying of cancer she went home to see her family, when I was 10, and never got to come home to us. She died and was buried in Canada. I was here in the states and never got to say "goodbye". I am thankful for these sites that allow me to feel close to my mother again. Can anyone tell me though how I can get a copy of her death certicate? I would sure appreciate this, I as her only daughter have only her bible and alarm clock.

I happened upon this sight when I was looking up the Royal Gazette of Bermuda. I was born in Botwood, Newfoundland and returned in 2004, first time in 37 years. I am thrilled to have found this website and it is so well done with so much history. Newfoundland and Labrador is truly God's Country and I dearly hope to return with my grown sons some day.

Hi Sid! How excited I am that you have a site! You taught me at the old Trade School in Carbonear, back in the 7o's.....I was then Judy White...I am now Judy Healey. I went back and forth to my Art classes with Bobby Hatch, I guess you remember her , you taught her as well. I only took classes two Winters but wish I had gone longer. I really enjoyed the classes and I got alot out of it..thanks to you! I love your Art work, I think it is the best! I still love to paint, as a matter of fact, Gerry just gave me a beautiful Italian Easel for my birthday, I will be 51 on the 22nd of September...what a great gift! Take care and keep up the excellent work. Judy

Looking for a unique stone for a 1930 homestead A Frame house. Mainly for lower portion. Some of that red stone around Goobies is nice. What would it cost, I wonder, to ship that stuff all the way to Alberta???? I am from Fox Harbour, P. Bay originally.

My wife and I spent three weeks IN NFL and Lab and we found it awesome. The kindness of the people and the beauty of nature were unforgettable. We surely will return. We especially mention Fortune Haebour NFL and Red Bay Lab. Driving from Goose Bay to Baie Comeau is a thrilling experience, but drive in pairs!
