I love the work of Mr. Squires, the bronze statue in NFLD of an Indian maiden named Shawnadith. I have tried to contact him but the email I have keeps bouncing back as not in use. Please, if possible pass this on to him. He has inspired me so and I would like to contact him. Karen

I'm an old USAF type who spent a couple of years in the Labrador, Cartwright, Hopedale, and Sagelek, in the early 1960's. I feel blest to have seen The Labrador at this time. Skidoo's were here, but there were still some dog teams, and for a 20 year old Midwestern Farm Boy, this was the stuff of legend. Heres Noddin T' Bye

Thank you for making this interesting bit of history available via the internet. My father was a Charles Hodgins, of County Tipperary, Ireland, very near to Nenagh. He emigrated to New York when he was 14 and attended Trinity School, Wall Street, later Columibia College and University. His older brother in NY, Tom and younger brother in England, John Percy, both were decorated veterans of World War II.

But I stumbled into your website. It gives me a good background understanding on ship navigation. Thanks! Sincerely, Hugh

Good job Rick. As you probably know Rennie Slaney was my grandfather. You mentioned the release of the R/Commission in 1969. I remember my grandfather having a heart attack at my fathers cabin at Salmonier Pond and as a result passed away. It was on a Sunday, the day before the Royal Commission was released. It's too bad he didn't get a chance to review the final copy. Dan Farrell

My father has often told me stories of my grandfather and how he survived the Battle of the Somme. My most prized possession is a postcard to my grandmother from France which reads, "Dear Mable, Just a couple of cards to let you know I'm still alive. hope you get them alright. yours, Heber". I searched yahoo and came across your site where there was a picture of Private Heber Noseworthy of the First Newfoundland Regiment. I tell my friends about my grandfather and show people the card. My son is 7 yrs old and I tell him too, and he will tell his son. Your site has helped me learn more about what these brave men did and they will never be forgotten in my family. Thank you for documenting their story on the internet.

Re Mary Jane's 377 Duckworth Street, St John's Hello my name is David Smith. My grandfather was John Slattery the ownwer of Slattery's Wholesale Dry Goods. After speaking to my uncle in St. John's I believe that your description about the store are not entirely correct. In 1907 my great-grandfather William A Slattery passed away. For several years the business was managed by a family trust. My grandfather didnot become involved with the business until after his return from WW1. It was not until several years later that my grandfather assumed control of the business from other family members. Given that my grandfather would have been 15 years old in 1909 it is highly unlikely that he would have been in a position to purchase the store. The possible reason for the confusion could be that William A Slattery's oldest brother John Lawrence Slattery who was the Secretary-Treasurer of the St. John's Municipal Council may have been involved with the store's affairs during the period it was managed by the trust. If you wish to discuss this futher please e-mail or call me during the day at (306)787-0297. Thanks

Thank you for including the argument for the Cape Breton landing in your articles on John Cabot. The argument for a southern landing is very strong, particularly when we know most of the land was discovered on the return voyage to England. However, I believe any sighting of Northern Cape Breton would lead to a landing in Sydney harbour since it would open up in front of a passing vessel. Coming in south of Scateri Island is the natural landfall for ships coming from Europe. Gabarus headland would be visible and a landing would occur somewhere between Scateri and Louisbourg - perhaps at Baleine. Scateri Island is known as St. John's Island on all of the earliest maps. This would be the substantial island discovered shortly after the landing on the same day. Why would such a relatively small island be marked on the earliest maps if it were not a marker of some sort?

I'm originally from Newfoundland and I can't tell you how impressed I was to see this site. It's just wonderful and very helpful. I'm presently in school studying Art History and I'm working on a paper comparing Newfoundland art and Minoan art. This site is great. The virtual tour is excellent. The section called Shaped by the sea has been most helpful because that is exactly what I am focused on. Both Newfoundland and Crete are islands and the sea influences the art and the artists a great deal. Thank you so much for taking the time and effort to put us on the cyber map. Great job.

Great site and I think the map is a great idea. I know it is probably still in its refining stages, but I did note one important error. You have Winterton, Trinity Bay, identified as Winterland. Winterland is on the Burin Peninsula. You also have not included by home town of Port Union, but I forgive you for that ;-) Jim

Nice site, but would suggest, as a few others have, that you include at leats all current communities, eg Lewisporte is not there, popl'n ~4000 and incorporated I think 50 or so years ago), and further that all oled community names as well as those resettled be included. A bigger task, but it would be a great enhancement and of considerable use to thise doing geneology research, particularly those 'from away'. Great site though!!

Hello. I'm doing research for a Canadian poetry database at the University of New Brunswick. One of the poets on my list is Joseph Henry Clinch who is said to be Joseph Hart Clinch's father. I'm told that this man actually was John Clinch, Canada's first vaccinator. He wrote down the Beothuk vocabulary in the late eighteenth-, early nineteenth-century. Does anyone know if John Clinch was also a poet? Please let me know. Thanks

I am currently a MUN student doing an historical architecture course. I did not find anything on this web site on the St. John's Railway Station, which I hoped I would for an upcoming paper. Although it is too late for any of your reasearch to benefit me, I do suggest that you include some information on this station. It is an example of the Chateau Style which the CPR made a distinct Canadian style. There are few examples of this style left in Atlantic Canada, and there are no other examples in Newfoundland.

Found the Evelly house in Trinity East on youe web site. I've known little of our family history, but do know that it traces back to Trinity East and that we still have extended family there. We are planning a trip to Newfoundland and Trinity in the near future, the Evelly house will certainly be on the list of things we must see.

I recently attended an Agoriginal Awareness course in Calgary. During a discussion, the speaker stated how he was appalled with the fact that there is a lack of recognition for the demise of the Beothuk People in Newfoundland. As a Newfoundlander, I was embarrased because I was unable to provide names or places within NFLD that do recognize the Beothuk people. It would be greatly appreciated if you could list these places on your website. Sincerely, Jackie Maddigan-Wood

Although NZ is a long way from Newfoundland, my grandfather emigrated here in the 1930's. Although adopted at birth, he always told us he was half Micmac (his mother being full blood, who died when he was born). So, we have a great interest in all things Micmac and it was great to come upon your site. Keep up the good work!

I am wondering if there are Wyatt's in Nfld. who think they might be related to the Wyatt's in N.S .The story goes that there was a Joseph Wyatt who was reported as " lost at sea " to his parents who lived in England . The parents later moved to N.S. and it is believed Joseph was not " lost..." afterall , but ended up settling in Newfoundland when he couldn't locate his parents . He was the son of John and Margaret (McLuskey) Wyatt. I would like to hear from you if you think you might be related to the people I have mentioned.

What a fantastic site, comprehensive, and informative. I am proud to say my heritage comes from NFLD....my great great grandparents were Robert and Elizabeth Woolfrey who settled Lewisporte, and my great grandfather, John George Goodwin Matthews was a Telegraph Linesman Foreman who helped Marconi set up his tower on Signal Hill. Though my grandfather decided to leave NFLD, the oral history lives on and my son will learn about how the Matthews and the Woolfreys were part of NFLD history and settlement.

What a wonderful site! How nice it is to see our historical homes so well catalogued. My husband and myself have visited many of these wonderful heritage sites and wished we could spend the night in many of them. Our favorite so far has to be the historic homes of the Barbour family at Newtown Bonavista. We plan to go again next year when the new sealing interpretation centre is open. Hopefully, one day you will have a virtual tour, especially for those who are not so fortunate as to live here or to be able to visit.

I have a tremedous amount of family information on my namesake, Guy. I would love to tie the entire information together with that located in the UK. Guy's hospital was donated by our family as one fo the first hospitals for the common man. The money to build the hospital came from selling the then newly printed King James Bible.
