We host an annual St. Joseph Pilgrimage on the second weekend of August. This year being August 7, 8 & 9, 2009. For more than 50 years people from all over Alberta and Saskatchewan have come to this sacred site to pray, enjoy friendships, new and old, and celebrate their faith. The Pilgrimage began in the late 1930's with stories of visions on the Hill, reported by elders. The site became widely known, and was dedicated to the Patronage of St. Joseph. I enjoy this website and looking at the many heritage structures that the NL Heritage Society has managed to save, despite the "out with the old and in with the new" mantra of the early Confederation years. However, I have to bring to your attention the location of the one-room Anglican School in Bonavista on your guided tour map. While a newer central school was indeed in that location (it is now the Lion's Club), the heritage one is in the Bayley's Cove area on Swyers's Hill and served Anglican children in that area of town. Great website, great society, keep up the excellent work!

Hi Heather,

You are correct - the location of the school on the tour map is incorrect. After consulting with a resident of Bonavista who showed us what he believes is the proper location, I made the correction to the map. I trust this meets with your approval.

You can view the corrected version of the map at: http://www.heritage.nf.ca/society/rhs/bonavista/ default.html

I commented previously about the Southern Cross disaster. I did not mention my greatgrandfathers name. He was William John Sharpe from Paradise who moved there from Spoon Cove. His daughter Winnifred Sharpe was only 1 year old when her father drowned. She married Henry Dawe of Long Pond. They are my father, Zach Dawe's parents. Nan always told the sad story of losing her father while she was just a baby. She had a beautiful picture of him in a sailor suit that she treasured and proudly showed it off to us.

I have been researching Newfoundland and Labrador because my husband's family lived there in the late 1700s through the mid 1800s. They lived on the south coast in a little town named Garia. What a fascinating province! Your site was very interesting and easy to use. I'd love to visit some da

Hi Suzane,

The best way to find information on Mary Pratt would be to contact The Rooms Provincial Art Gallery. Contact information for the gallery can be found on The Rooms web site at: http://www.therooms.ca/contact.asp

Thank you for taking the time to insert your comment into the Guest Book. It is appreciated.

As A young girl, I rememder visiting Mr. Higgins home. My grandmother, Lucy Blackler from Mobile, Nfld had at one time worked for the family. I only saw her twice in my life as my mother, Rita, married during the war and returned to Windsor,Ont with my dad, Jack Kearns , who was stationed at Cape Spear with the Essex Scottish. I always remember this magnificent home in St John's. The year was maybe 1958 or 59. Cathy Allen

The History that is written on this site would make anyone proud to be a Newfoundlander or be a relative of one. Why is there not a picture of the Labrador Flag? After spending 13 years in Churchill Falls Lab. I fly the Flag at my cottage & the Newfoundland one in Ottawa.

I am the grand-daughter of Caroline Mae Brown, born in 1899 in Salvage to Alexander and Elisabeth (Oldford) Brown. She left home at an early age, about 12 or 13, lived with a sister for a while, wound up in Boston, m. Clifford G. Dennis. I would like to know more about the Brown family, before and after my grandmother. Having links to the most complete genealogies of the founding families would be a nice addition.

I have found your site most useful for documents on the history of Fort Pitt. I am particularly interested in the change of command at that fort in the summer of 1771, and am writing to see if you can put me in contact with a historian who could direct me to appropriate documents on Royal Navy personnel at the fort, etc. E.G: Did the fort have a log book or other documentation? Where, if so, would it be stored? Etc, etc. Any response please to Gordon Brown at g.and.o.brown@erols.com Many thanks.
