May - August 2007

I came across this site while I was looking into the flags of Newfoundland, as I have recently been spotting the Tri-Colour flag floating around. I don't think I ever knew about such a flag and I was happy to find out the history of it. Thank- you so much for you help in rediscovering some things about my home province which I hope and pray to come back to sometime real soon.

I was stationed in Argentia 1958 through 1960 at the Naval Air Station. I visited St. Johns on a number of occasions, however did not go to the Crows Nest. I'm sure that I missed a wonderful event.

Re. The seal hunt and Newfoundland's heritage, whether you agree with the hunt currently or not, it is a part of the history (the heritage) of Newfoundland.

Interesting site. My Dad worked down in the Bell Island mines for 26 years. I remembered him coming home covered in red ore each day. He was one of the lucky ones who was able to find employment at the new Bell Island hospital that opened in 1966, the year the mines closed. As for the mines being opened again? Not in our lifetime.

Seal Hunting - Part of NF's heritage??? That's what Southerner's used to say about slaves! A barbaric shameful practice that makes NF look like the backwoods redneck society that it tries to appear not to be.

Born in St. John's Nfld, I attended Presentation from Grade One to Six until my parents migrated to Toronto. Even now, I remember this time in my life as if it was yesterday. My last visit home, I visited the school. The church was undergoing reconstruction and the school was used for other purposes. I had hoped to walk inside but nonetheless, it was full of memories.

My husband and I made our first visit to Newfoundland last September. My father-in-law was a survivor of the USS Pollux and we visited St. Lawrence and Lawn. We also visited Argentia. The NL historical sites have been helpful for us to gain a more complete picture of the time and events. I have one correction, however, to Ms. Higgins' article about Argentia. The USS Pollux was a supply ship, not a destroyer. The other ship involved in the tragedy, the USS Wilkes, was the other destroyer. We enjoyed our stay and as we didn't have time to see and experience nearly enough of this beautiful place, we will be back to Newfoundland very soon.

Both sides of my Mom's family come from Newfoundland. Have been doing genealogy and found some very interesting information. Her father was a Maddick and her Mom a Way. Have really gotten into the history of the entire province. Love your web site.

I was a USAF 2LT, SA-16 pilot based at Goose Bay from July 1953 to August 1954. At that time most of the US side of the base was world war two era construction with new construction really just beginning. My stay was quite pleasant.

I have always had an interest in Newfoundland. Back in 1965-66, I met a man by the name of Herb Sims in Banff, Alberta. He was from Newfoundland. I remember him talking about Goose Bay. Even though he was a little older than me, he was a nice person. I heard he left Banff sometime after I moved back to BC in 1966. I often wonder if he is still alive.

I am originally from St. John's and read Cassie's 'Death On the Ice' immediately after publication. I can fully understand her conviction in telling this story as it made a huge impact on my understanding of the plight of sealers who are merely trying to make a living, thus keeping the seal population from negatively impacting the marine ecosystem.
