Très beau site! Vraiment très impressionnant! On vous invite à consulter notre site web au www.cfof.on.ca. De plus, nous cherchons des lieux pour présenter une exposition iténérante sur le folklore oral. Pourriez-vous nous guider dans cette demande? Merci. Adèle Séguin, documentaliste

As a proud Newfoundlander I was searching for a picture of an iceberg. Could not find what I wanted until I stumbled in a store in NS, they said they had something in the basement...came up Blackwood's print "Fire on the Labrador" I have proudly displayed it in my home. I look at it everyday, reminiscent of my homeland & so proud of the "Newfie" artist. Thank you, Mr. Blackwood. It's a pleasure to view your work on this site. Thanks for a little of the "rock" here in the hot sunny south.

My great grandfather Nicol McKechnie was a ship's carpenter and visited the seal fishery in 1873 on the steam ship 'City of Halifax' from Liverpool. I believe their ship (one of many) collected 6000 seals from Bonavista Bay. Any more related information would be welcome.

Got to say this is a great way of revisiting the family of Conne River through the eyes of many who never knew us. I am a native of Conne River and my grandfather was the youngest son of the last real chief of Conne River. Peter Jeddore was my grandfather and I'll always remember his storys. To anyone who look's at this please email me and let me know your ideas.

What a neat site! Just read Wayne Johnston's wonderful book about Newfoundland - The Colony of Unrequited Dreams. Interested in the similiarities (and the differences) between our countries -large remote islands, etc. We could have been part of Australia in 1900. New Zealand was one the Australasian colonies involved in the conferences that led to the formation of Australia. Our prime minister at the time vetoed our joining. The fact that Newfoundland united with Canada so recently (relatively) shows that there is still hope. I think "outports" must be peculiar to Newfoundland. Johnston uses it in the same way you do, in reference to isolated coastal communities. Not a word that is used here at all. Many thanks. Looking forward to further developments on your site. Hey! It's funny to sit here in the Faroe Islands and write some words to you. "How did I end here?" some would ask. It's for a simple reason. I'm looking for a friend born in Tilting. We were both cadets on the same ship two years ago. Hopefully you (Jeff) will read this and write me back. Maybe others who know him would tell him about this message. Thanks for letting my write this on your website.

Phantastic site, enjoyed every second of a few hours looking through it - but would you check your first par. in "Glossary", i.e. "Lithography". I think a slight change is in order. the acidetch will not affect the greasepencilled drawing but will etch the "uncovered" part of the lithograph-stone.

I have just chanced upon your wonderful site and I have taken the TOUR!!! I am thrilled to have found this site. Most of these buildings and homes in St. John's we all took for granted growing up there but it is such a treat to now learn their history and tour them. I am sure there must be many more around the city and hope in future that they will be added. Thank you so much. I intend to visit this site often. I would love to know more about the homes on Kings Bridge Rd and some in the Waterford Bridge area. Even a peep inside would be welcomed. One in particular that comes to mind is the home on corner of old Topsail Rd. & Craigmillar Ave. next to the cemetary. Beautiful stained glass door entrance. Would love to see the inside of this home.

I think that some should be there and go through the house with you and tell you things about it. Because there are some very good points about it, if your family is from Fogo there are some good things that you can learn about them like up in the room were they have things about the fisherman you can see if there were people threr belong to you.

My husband and I just returned from a vacation on your majestic island. Our memories are of cliffs in which contented homes hid, sounds of shorebirds reaching for the sky, and the smell of fish in the air. We found a land of contrast--Gods beautiful landscape and hard living. We look forwarding to returning to enjoy again the wonderful sites, tastes, and people of Newfoundland. Thanks to everyone for making this a trip to remember.

I found your pages very interesting and plan to bookmark it. I am looking for genealogy information about the Micmac's because my father told me that his greatgrand mother was Micmac. I recently met a second cousin in California who's father belonged to a Indian organization called the Red Man Lodge in Annapolis, Maryland. I have not been able to find this organization. Does anyone know about it or who I could contact to find out where to look. My cousin found in an old chest her father's headdress but nothing more. Please contact me at my email address if you can help me. Thank you. Lorraine

Thanks for a wonderful website, especially the segment on WWI. My cousin Francis Galgay (Chick to the family) was killed on July 1, 1916 at Beaumont Hamel, and even though I was born 30 yrs. later, I still remember my relatives talking about him. It's wonderful that all this material has been preserved and presented on the Web. A great way to promote Newfoundland, for us Newfoundlanders who are living "away". Some good, my sons!

I first saw a painting by Mary Pratt when i was ten or so, my favorite painting was of a dining room with a rich look about it. there were plates and silverware and a candle stick, but in the midst of all the classiness was a tupperware container. I could tell from that one painting she was a mom and that was probably an experience she'd been through and seen.

Hi! Great web site you have here! We would like to bring to your attention the huge cedar totem pole erected off the TCH in front of Marble Mountain(exit 8) we call the HERITAGE TREE. On this immense pole that is 52 feet high, 4.7 feet in diameter and weighing 8 tons, are 55 exquisite carvings depicting well over a 1000 years of Nfld and Lab history. Our web site is at http://members.tripod.com/Heritage_Tree/home.html/ Come support us, visit us and see the Heritage Tree in person. From before the Vikings to Hibernia, from Captain Bob Bartlett to a Nfld dog, it's all there! It's free to park, picnic, swim, canoe, explore, hike, study, relax, sunbathe, even smell the wonderful cedar of this tree. It's all yours!..our past, our future, our PRESENT to you! Mike Madigan,709-686-5427(committee member) P.S.When you see Leif Eiriksson at eye level on the Tree, be sure to say hello. Stare him straight in the eye...he will blink...or so visitors have told us!!

Hi, I was wondering about the notable lack of works by Lise Sorensen in your permanent collection. Lise Sorensen is a painter who has captured the Newfoundland landscape for over 3 decades, and her work is known around the country. Why would she not be included in your permanent collection? I was lucky enough to have taken an art class with her in Montreal, and I am disappointed to see that her work is missing from your collection. I hope that you will change this situation, as your collection could not be representative of works of Newfoundland artists without including her. Thank you, Andrew Plumbly

My grandmother, Harriet Farnum, when she was 18/19 came from England to serve as a nurse for Dr. Grenfell, I heard stories she was given a sled, dogs, Bible, and told to serve the poor. After 5 yrs, she tried to return to England but her boat was torpedoed by German sub so went to New England to help with epidemic. I'm researching her life & wonder if any record in Labrador carries names of those who served under Dr. Grenfell.
