Gravestone of Basque Privateer, John Svigaricipi.
Svigaricipi was a privateer who sailed out of Plaisance. He captured hundreds of merchant vessels in
his lifetime, however, it was his seizure of the 100-gun English warship, Princess, which earned a
military decoration from King Louis XIV of France. Svigaricipi was killed in 1694 during the French
attempt to capture Ferryland. His gravestone is now located in the Castle Hill Interpretation Centre.
