Reginald Shepherd Whaling at Dildo
1965, Oil on Masonite, 39 x 59.5 cm

Reginald Sheppard's painting Whaling at Dildo is a work which some viewers mistake for an image of frolicking whales or dolphins, perhaps because the image is abstracted by the use of lines and overlapping. Many of the lines are, in fact, harpoons. The overlapping of the whale forms helps to heighten the sense of motion and energy.
