Don Wright Night Spawning
1986, Woodcut on Mulberry Paper 5/11, 86.2 x 62.7 cm

Night Spawning is a woodcut print by Don Wright. Using a dark paper on which to print this image allowed the artist to portray a dark and mysterious underwater environment. Fish forms are visible in the lower part of the print, while other areas are somewhat abstract, like the crashing wave or whale tail in the centre. Woodcuts are characterized by hard-edged marks made by the cutting tools. The artist has used this effect to help create movement; the gesture or motion he made while cutting the wood is translated into a mark which is visible on the print. Wright was one of the artists who helped establish the St. Michael's Printshop.
