Gerry Squires' painting No More May Gulls Cry at Their Ears is a haunting image of loss. Figures on the cliff top appear from the past. Spirit figures down below look forward, facing clear skies ahead. An abandoned baby appears on the cliff face buried in the rock. The image is a reaction to the resettlement program of the 1950s which encouraged Newfoundlanders to relocate to growth centers where they would have increased access to services such as hospitals, schools, and electricity. Many who resettled still yearn and mourn for the life they left behind. © 1998 AGNL. |
